Homework will be assigned every night. We understand that time with family after school is important and design homework tasks to be minimal while still supporting student learning and allowing parents to connect with students over what is being taught in class.
Math: Students complete math homework each night. This is assigned by Ms. Poag.
Reading: Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 focused minutes a night out of an appropriate book. After students read for 20 minutes, they're required to write a 2-3 sentence summary in the provided space in their planners. Writing about reading has been proven to strengthen reading comprehension. In class, students are taught how to select appropriate texts. We have book collections in our classroom and school library and will be happy to assist students with finding a book which makes them WANT to read. Increased time reading is a great indicator of growth on EOGs.
Word Study: Students receive a list of vocabulary words each Monday morning. We review these with the class. We discuss each word and give examples of it in words and pictures. Each night, students complete a task with the words. Their task on Thursday night is to study for Friday's test.
Science: Students complete a few EOG-prep questions about science we're learning in the classroom. This is assigned by Mrs. Cleland.
Parent Signature: Parents are required to sign their child’s planner every night. This lets us know that you have reviewed your child’s homework and have seen comments which may have written to you regarding your child’s conduct and academic performance. It’s important for us to stay in close contact to best help your child succeed in school. If a student does not get a parent signature, the student has not completed their homework. The purpose of this is to ensure that students share their planners with parents every night.
